Or Marina goes green!
Portishead Marina have long had a maintenance problem regarding the traffic lights that control the entry of craft into the Marina at low and high tide conditions. With serious potential problems arising from lamps blowing in the traffic lights at crucial time and the subsequent need for some lost man hors in lowering the lights , changing the lamps and the raising them again the decision was taken to move to LED technology. With no degradation caused to the LED lamp through repeated powering up and down the benefits within this application are clear.
The request was made to Selectronic to provide a custom design solution. The key requirement was that the new LED solution should be based on a new PCB with the combination of LEDs that could utilise the existing fittings allowing a straight forward re- fit to take place. Care was taken to select the right LEDs to work correctly with existing lenses and a custom board produced that would provide a direct connection to the existing fittings.
On this basis completing the re-furnishment was carried in a minimum downtime ensuring the on going operation of the Marina. Now in operation the high output LEDs give a clear indication of status with much better visibility for the craft entering over the traditional lamps in both day and night conditions , are highly economical to run and with the life time assurances of LEDs maintenance costs are at a minimum.
This development into the traffic lights within Marina’s extends Selectronic’s involvement in other port nautical applications where they are working with other customers producing the lighting for bollards on the mooring piers and also the main applications for LEDs in signal and ambient lighting on boats.
